Crates ("the app") is a personal collection tracker for physical media and collectibles — movies, music, video games, and sports cards. It is developed by Alan Lopez as a single-developer indie app.
Creating an account requires a display name and an email address. There are no passwords — signing in works by emailing you a 6-digit verification code, which you enter in the app to log in. We use a third-party service, Resend, solely to deliver these verification emails; Resend does not receive your collection data.
The following data is stored on our server (Cloudflare), tied to your account:
The following data stays local to your device only:
Crates connects to a backend API for search results, pricing estimates, and cover art. When performing these lookups, the app may send item metadata — such as a movie title, album name, artist, or player name — to retrieve results. These lookups never include your personal information.
Cover art may be fetched from the following services using only item titles and years:
You can permanently delete your account and all associated server-side data at any time from Profile → Danger Zone → Delete Account. This immediately and permanently removes your email, display name, collection, and ratings from our server. We recommend using the JSON export feature (Settings → Export Backup) to back up your collection first if you need one.
Crates does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app is rated 4+ on the App Store and does not contain content directed at children.
